Yes! Feel free to come  in and get to know Sensei Tong and find out if Karate is for you. The first two classes are free, and the weekly classes are very affordable as well. We look forward to seeing you!

Get some exercise, get in better shape, gain some balance and flexibility all while learning self defense, self reliance and discipline, with small class sizes and a focus on learning and fun!

There is no one sized answer to this question. It really depends on your dedication, time and practice. Every advancement is earned, not given. But we will always work toward hitting your goals.

Show up a few minutes early for each class. Show respect to your instructors and fellow students. When sparring, remember that you are here to learn, not to hurt others. If you are struggling, ask for help. Come with a positive, can do attitude and help others when the opportunity arises. And do not forget that you get what you put in. Practice what you learn at home when possible.

About Sensei Tong

Sensei Tong began her martial arts journey with Herb Johnson Family Karate on December 28, 2010. Training under Sensei Lowder and Sensei Gernoble under the direct instruction of Hanshi Johnson, she quickly became a prominent advocate for women in martial arts and frequently assisted with school demonstrations. As an active competitor on the tournament circuit, she excelled in Kata, Kabuto, demonstration, chambara, and kumite.

Instructional Leadership & Advancements

• Early Instruction: Began teaching the "Little Dragons" program shortly after attaining her Second Dan.
• Third Dan (2015): Relocated to the Eastside Dojo to fulfill a commitment to Hanshi Johnson. Following his passing, she trained under Renshi Bailey, expanding her expertise in Kabuto and earning her Third Dan and official title of Sensei.
• Fifth Dan & Beyond: Continued as a chief instructor under Renshi Hernly, adapting to updated curricula while achieving her third-level Kabuto and Fifth Dan.

Impact and Teaching Philosophy

Throughout her tenure, Sensei Tong has trained hundreds of students of all ages and abilities, including individuals with developmental disabilities. She specializes in adapting her instruction to help students overcome personal obstacles, build confidence, and achieve their goals in Shorei-Goju-Ryu. Her dedication is reflected in the success of her students—including her own sons, whom she guided to the rank of black belt, and her daughter, who is currently training for her adult black belt.

Future Vision

Sensei Tong remains committed to her personal training, evolving alongside the Shorei-Goju-Ryu curriculum, and inspiring future martial artists. Her ultimate goals include owning a dojo and continuing Hanshi Johnson’s legacy to “make the world safer one black belt at a time.”
